Forum: GratefulDead Subject: A question about Grateful Dead/JGB Overlap..

..or lack thereof. I can only think of two songs that Jerry played regularly with both bands, Sugaree and TLEO. I am not really thinking about the acoustic sets as some other songs would come up there like Ripple, Deep Elem, Bird Song etc. However acoustic sets were not a regular occurrence for either band and the acoustic repertory was more restricted. So my question is why those two songs? Were they Jerry's favorite songs or did have some kind of special attachment to them?

For me I kind of wished the GD played songs like TLEO and FOTD more up tempo as they were original introduced and if Jerry wanted to change that, do so with JGB. However it seems like TLEO slowed down with about the same time for both bands.

I realize that Jerry might have taken the answer to these questions with him, however I thought some of our learned scholars here might have come across something in their readings. Thanks in advance for any help.

Can't help with overlap question, but on the topic of slow tempo, I have sometimes wondered if the dreamy slow Friend of Devil that strts showing up in '77 might have been the result of Persian opium entering the scene. There's a universe of difference between an acid-fueled '68 Eleven, say, and a gently floating, narcotic FOTD from 77 or 78. I think we've kicked this around more than once here in the past, and concluded it's hard to ascribe many specifics to the drugs of choice at any moment in their career.

It wasn't Pesian Opium it was a refined and easily smokable type of Heroin. It was joked that the band hated to fly w/ jerry cause he would lock himself in the bathroom and the plane could have been crashing and Jerry wouldn't have come out to strap on a seat belt.

The double post on this matter was unintended as was my knuckle headed mis-spelling of Persian.
